Katherine Murphy, lovingly known as Kay, peacefully passed away on September 28, 2025, at Samaritan Hospice at Jefferson Hospital, New Jersey Division, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on January 13, 1939, and raised in South Philadelphia, Kay held a deep affection for her neighborhood and community.
While she worked many jobs throughout her life, Kay's greatest joy was being a mother and raising her children. She was immensely proud to be the devoted wife of Philadelphia Firefighter Charles Murphy Sr., and she carried that pride in her heart always. Together, they built a strong and loving family, rooted in faith, loyalty, and love. Her children treasure fond memories of summers in North Wildwood, filled with laughter and family traditions.
Kay was a woman of simplicity and honesty, known for speaking her mind with both strength and love. She was the beloved wife of the late Charles Murphy Sr., loving mother to Charles (Linda) Murphy, Michael (Maureen) Murphy Sr., James (Ellen) Murphy Sr., and D.O. Edward (Christine) Murphy. She was a proud and devoted Mom-Mom to Jennifer, Matthew, Ryan, Moira (Chris) Platt, Michael (Amanda) Jr., Katelyn, Kristin (fiance Marcus Mitchell), Meighan, Leigh, James Jr., Hayley, and Erin (Bobby) Jenne, and cherished great Mom-Mom to nine. She was the sister of the late Delores Mackin and John Ibbotson, and she will be deeply missed by her nieces, nephews, and many dear friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather on Thursday morning, October 2, 2025, from 9:00-10:20 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 2317 S. 3rd St Phila., PA 19148.
