Jose Manuel “Cheo” Tellado
Jose Manuel Tellado, lovingly known as “Cheo” to his family and friends, peacefully passed away on September 26, 2026, at St. Monica Manor Rehabilitation Center.
Born in Lares, Puerto Rico, he was the son of the late Manuel Tellado Alicea and Marcelina Crespo-Rivera. At a young age, Jose relocated to Philadelphia, where he built a life centered around his faith, his family, his work, and his commitment to helping others.
Throughout his life, Jose wore many hats. He worked as a farmer, a factory worker, and as a chef at Villa de Roma, where his talents as a chef was well known. But of all the roles he held, none meant more to him than being a Pentecostal Pastor and serving others through his faith.
Jose was the proud pastor of Iglesias de Reposo Church, where he touched the lives of countless parishioners. He was a man who believed that faith was not meant to be confined within the walls of a church. His ministry extended into the community, wherever there was someone who needed encouragement, guidance, compassion, or simply someone willing to listen.
One of the accomplishments he spoke of with great pride was his service at CFCF, where he served as Capellan of Service. He cherished that title and the opportunity it gave him to bring his forward-thinking approach, faith, leadership, and encouragement to others. Jose believed in second chances, perseverance, and the power of helping people find a better path.
Jose was a traditional Puerto Rican family man who carried his heritage and values with great pride. He was outgoing, strong-willed, and a man who believed in doing things the right way. He could be tough and strict when he needed to be, but underneath that strength was an enormous heart filled with love, compassion, generosity, and care for others.
He was also a wonderful cook, and preparing food for family and friends was one of the ways he showed his love. Jose loved cars and could often be found working on them. A true handyman and self-taught mechanic, there was very little he wouldn't try to fix. His determination and incredible work ethic were qualities he carried throughout his entire life.
Family was Jose’s world. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who treasured the time he spent with those he loved. He persevered through some of life's most difficult challenges, and his strength and determination became an example to his family. As a father and Abuelito, he was proud, protective, loving, caring, generous, and devoted.
As a pastor, Jose was supportive, compassionate, intelligent, well-spoken, and a gifted motivator. He had a natural ability to encourage people and make them believe in themselves. His words carried meaning because they came from a man who had lived through life's challenges and understood the importance of faith, perseverance, and family.
Jose sadly missed his beloved wife and childhood sweetheart, Maria Milagros Tellado, with whom he shared 58 years of marriage. Their love and lifelong connection remained an important part of his heart throughout his life.
He was the beloved father of Marcelina (Angel) Fuster, Jose (Nea) Tellado, and Tamara (June)-Dones. He was the proud and loving Abuelito of Marcelina Marie Fuster, Joseph Frasier-Tellado, Felix (Alexa) Fuster, Franco (fiancée Kristin DeMarco) D’Agostino, Jena (fiancé Bryden Igielski) Tellado, and Antonio M. Tellado, and the cherished great-grandfather of seven great-grandchildren.
He was the dear brother of Sonia Correa, Carmen Alicea, Rubin Alicea, Rosa Alicea, Lucy Alicea, Alejandro Alicea, Jose Manuel Alicea, and Maribel Alicea, and was preceded in death by Amparo Alicea, Carmen Alicea, and Papo Alicea. He will also be deeply missed by his many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, parishioners, and extended family.
Jose leaves behind a legacy that reaches far beyond his immediate family. He leaves behind the people he helped, the lives he touched through his ministry, the lessons he taught his children and grandchildren, the meals he prepared, the cars he fixed, the stories he shared, and the faith he so proudly lived each day.
He was a man of faith, a man of family, and a man of service. His greatest accomplishment was not any title he held, but the lives he touched along the way. His memory will live on through his family, his church, and all those who were blessed to call him “Cheo.”
Relatives and friends are invited to his visitation on Friday morning, October 2, 2026, from 9:30 AM until 1130am at Murphy Ruffenach Brian W. Donnelly Funeral Home, 3rd & Wolf Streets.
Religious Services will begin at 11:30am, followed by burial at Greenmount Cemetery.
