In Loving Memory of David "Dave" Sanchez
July 6, 1934 - July 11, 2025
David Sanchez, lovingly known as "Dave" to his family and many dear friends, passed away peacefully on July 11, 2025, at Methodist Hospital, surrounded by loved ones. Born on July 6, 1934, in Rosario, Argentina, to the late Jesus and Maria (nee Salguero) Sanchez, Dave carried a deep pride for his Argentinian roots throughout his life.
A gifted athlete, Dave played professional soccer for his hometown team, Central, and later helped introduce and grow the sport in Philadelphia. After immigrating to the United States in 1967, his family settled in the vibrant South Philadelphia Italian Market neighborhood and later to 2nd Street--a place he cherished and often spoke of with fondness.
Dave embraced every opportunity that came his way. He worked tirelessly in various roles to provide a better life for his family, eventually achieving the American Dream. From working in the kitchen of the Saloon restaurant to capturing the first moments of newborns as a hospital photographer, Dave approached each job with pride and dedication. A self-taught photographer and artisan, he lovingly restored religious art and refurbished many cherished Madonna's in local churches, blending his creative talents with his deep spirituality.
His love for soccer endured as he played, coached, and taught countless local youth. Under Mayor Rizzo's administration, Dave helped designate the SEYAA field as an official soccer field for the city's children--a lasting legacy of his commitment to the community. He also served as a respected referee and remained a devoted fan of the Philadelphia Eagles.
Dave was a man who brought people together. His legendary Asado cookouts united friends, neighbors, and family in laughter and celebration. He delighted in performing magic tricks, capturing memories through his camera lens, especially during the annual Mummers Parade, and sharing joy with those around him. Family was his heart and soul.
He is now reunited with his beloved wife, Norma (nee Dellafontana) Sanchez, and their late son, Sergio Sanchez. David leaves behind his devoted son Dario (Karen) Sanchez, cherished daughter-in-law Denise Sanchez, and three adoring grandchildren--David, Jenna, and Christopher Sanchez--whom he was immensely proud of. He is also survived by his loving brother Carlos (Linda) Sanchez, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins in Argentina and the United States, including Fabio (Nicole) Martorell and Nicolino Martorell, who held a special place in his heart.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather in remembrance and celebration of both Norma and David's lives on Monday, July 21, 2025, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Murphy Ruffenach Brian W. Donnelly Funeral Home, 3rd & Wolf Streets. A memorial service will follow at 8:00 p.m., and inurnment will be held privately at a later date at New St. Mary Cemetery in Bellmawr, New Jersey.
David Sanchez will be remembered as a kind-hearted, passionate, and generous man whose life touched many. His love, laughter, and legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
