Catherine L. “Cathy” Thornton
Catherine L. Thornton, of Gloucester City, New Jersey, affectionately known as “Cathy” to her family and friends, passed away peacefully.
Born on September 1, 1947, she was the daughter of the late Theodore and Mildred (nee Spitler) Hansen, Sr. Cathy was raised in Seattle, Washington. As the daughter of a proud veteran, she spent much of her childhood moving to different parts of the country, experiencing the beauty and diversity of many places before eventually settling in South Jersey, where she raised her family.
Cathy dedicated her career to Home Health Care, a calling that brought her tremendous joy and allowed her to do what came naturally to her—care for others. She was generous with her time, talents, and heart, and never hesitated to help someone in need. If Cathy had something to give, she gave it freely and without hesitation.
A true lover of the outdoors, Cathy was happiest whenever she could be camping, fishing, crabbing, or simply sitting by the beach, which was perhaps her favorite place of all. She also had a wonderful love for music and loved to sing. Cathy was a talented singer who enjoyed karaoke and could light up a room with her voice and personality. She especially loved country and western music and was known for proudly showing off her Southern drawl, often saying with her unmistakable charm, “Y’all come back here!”
Cathy was also a wonderful cook, famous among her family for her fried chicken and potato salad. She enjoyed cooking for the people she loved, playing bingo, and never missed watching her favorite soap opera, Days of Our Lives. She was a woman who took pride in her home and family and found joy in the simple things that made life special.
Independent, direct, and never afraid to tell it like it was, Cathy was a woman who always looked out for her family. She was feisty, quirky, loving, caring, selfless, and dependable, with a personality that was entirely her own. You always knew where you stood with Cathy, and you could always count on her when you needed her.
Cathy had a special love for her beloved pet, Peanut, and there is comfort in knowing they are reunited once again.
She leaves behind her loving children, James Thornton, Jeanette (Thomas) Cruz, and Brenda Marco; her cherished grandchildren, “T.J.,” Denise, Ethan, and Noah; her sister, Rosemarie Hansen, and was preceded in death by her siblings, Theodore Hansen, Jr. and Pamela Becker. She will also be lovingly remembered by her many nieces and nephews, especially her special niece, Tabatha Wallace, as well as her cousins and dear friends.
Cathy leaves behind a lifetime of memories, laughter, music, and love. Her voice may be quiet now, but the song she brought into the lives of those who loved her will never be forgotten.
Funeral Services will be private at Cathy’s request.
Family and friends are warmly invited to visit her Memorial Page to share memories, photographs, stories, and messages of condolence with her loved ones as we celebrate the remarkable woman she was and the beautiful life she lived.
